Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application layer control protocol used to initiate, modify or terminate multimedia sessions over Internet or IP based networks. These multimedia sessions include multimedia conferences, distance learning, Internet telephony and similar applications.

SIP is fast becoming the de-facto standard for communication over IP networks. It is a lightweight protocol that can be customized to suit the requirements of a variety of applications, such as multiplayer game sessions, communication sessions and network management sessions. Unlike other standards, SIP easily supports presence, mobility and availability.

The SIP suite has a multi-layered pluggable architecture in which components can be added or removed according to the individualized needs of the user. The SIP suite provides call control functionality from different perspectives, including high-level application, and SIP-aware User Agent (UA) application, and an application that needs low-level, complete control of the stack.

The SIP suite consists of the Core SIP Stack, which can be used as a basis for the development of User agents, Gateways and Application Servers, and the SIP User Agent Wrapper, which can be used as a basis for the development of SIP phones, instant messaging systems, click-to-talk facility, and more. The stack allows for seamless integration with third-party RTP/RTCP stacks and codecs. The stack is a highly versatile development tool with a rich set of APIs that provide optimal control and flexibility.
